Other alternatives to the Range Rover Sport include the Audi Q8, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. Think of the Range Rover Sport as its name implies - a tidier driving, if still not highly on-road-focused, version of the Range Rover. In fact, a dual-range transfer case is optional on the two lower Range Rover Sport trims but comes standard on every Range Rover. But the Sport is less focused on absolute off-road capability when compared to its larger Range Rover counterpart. The top trim offers four-wheel steering, which tightens its turning radius, plus a torque-vectoring rear axle. Under the hood is one of four available powertrain options. With a curved 13.1-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 13.7-inch digital instrument cluster, the Sport's interior is state of the art. Value Arriving in Canadian showrooms shortly, the standard-wheelbase Range Rover P530 First Edition carries a list price of $182,000 in Canada, and gets the full laundry list of goodies and runs with V8 power. A control panel on the right has buttons for raising and lowering both second and third rows, with a nifty one-touch button marker “4” that flattens all the seats for cargo hauling. A clever panel in the floor flips up making a backrest, and it also doubles as a cargo divider. Revellers enjoy overhead LED lighting and built-in cup holders. Practicality Getting into the Range Rover’s third-row is relatively easy thanks to one-touch control that has the second-row seat sliding and tipping forward. A 434-hp plug-in hybrid model will join the fleet for 2023 and a fully electric model in 2024. ![]() All models feature rear-wheel-steering, giving it a turning circle of 11 metres, the smallest of any Land Rover vehicle. All-wheel drive is standard, as is an 8-speed ZF gearbox. where long wheelbase models are available with the inline-six, here in Canada anything above this “entry-level” P400 SE get the robust V8. Performance The new Land Rover Range Rover initially comes with two powertrains – either a mild-hybrid turbocharged 3.0L straight-six making 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, or a new turbocharged 4.4L “hot-vee” V8 kicking out 523 ponies and 553 lb-ft and paired with the ubiquitous ZF eight-speed automatic, able to launch the RR to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. For the first time there’s an available third row (in the long-wheelbase models), and the new interior is a stunner, expanding on the previous linear design with finer detailing, exquisite material choice and peerless build quality. Of more interest to buyers will be the gen-five’s quantum leap in on-road ability, refinement, comfort, and technology. What’s new for 2022? The new Rangie carries all the off-road pedigree expected of the nameplate. Not an easy task, reimagining an icon, but lead designer Gerry McGovern and his team have succeeded, arriving at a sleek, pared-down elegance.
